Failed Back Surgery

Failed back surgery syndrome refers to the situation where a surgical intervention in the lumbar region fails to achieve the expected outcomes and/or complaints worsen after a second operation.

These outcomes may include the persistence of pre-existing pain, the emergence of new pains, restricted movement, a change in the nature of pain complaints, and an increase in pain.

Due to ongoing complaints, patients often undergo a second, third, or sometimes even a fourth surgery.

However, with each procedure, the symptoms tend to worsen rather than improve. At this point, the pain has become chronic, and further surgical intervention would complicate the situation further.

One commonly applied and effective treatment option for these patients is the implantation of a spinal cord stimulator. This is also known as Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) or Dorsal Column Stimulation (DCS).

Administered by algologists, the goal of this treatment is to mask and reduce pain to an acceptable level through stimulation applied to the painful area by the implanted device.
