Herniated Disc

A disc is an elastic structure located between two vertebrae, serving as a shock absorber to reduce pressure between the two bones.

It consists of two parts: a tough outer ring and a gel-like core in the center.

If there is weakness or damage in the outer tough ring, the gel-like core may attempt to protrude from that area, causing what is known as herniation. The displaced or fully extruded disc fragment can press on nearby nerves, leading to inflammation and sensitivity.

This compression along the nerve pathway can result in pain, numbness, tingling, and in severe cases, weakness in the leg and foot.

Therefore, pain associated with a herniated disc is often felt not in the lower back but more along the compressed nerve pathway, from the hip to the foot.

Treatment for this condition often involves rest, anti-inflammatory pain relievers, corticosteroid injections into the herniated area, or applying radiofrequency pulses to the compressed nerve ganglion.

If there is a loss of strength in the foot and/or leg, urgent surgery may be necessary. In such cases, consulting a neurosurgeon is advised.
